Slave to the Beads

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Today's post is a spotlight on blogger and jewelry maker Beth Wachla of Slave to the Beads. She was kind enough to do an interview with me and I just wanted to spotlight some of her unique, handmade jewelry!

How long have you been making jewelry for?

I’ve been making Jewellery for about 6 years. I was making super simple pieces to begin with and only really thought about working towards doing this as my career after doing a Jewellery Design Course at my local college and starting to learn more techniques.

What are you favorite materials to work with while making jewelry and where do you find them?

The course I did only really focused on metalsmithing, so whilst I did enjoy it, my favourite materials to use are definitely glass beads and vintage glass items (like cameos). I mainly buy my beads online. And have found some great vintage stuff on eBay as well as an awesome online store: http://www.papiervalise.com

Where do you get inspiration for your pieces?

My inspiration usually comes from the colours of the beads I’m working with. I find that whenever I get in a new lot of beads, I’m just raring to go! I’ve never been the kind of person to sit down and plan out my work; I just start and go with the flow.

Why did you decide to blog about your jewelry making endeavors?

I’ve always wanted to be one of those people who keeps a diary, I have the most shocking memory (my best friend contains my memories of high school, and my brother contains my childhood memories!), I figured blogging would be a great way to keep track of this time in my life. As well as being a wonderful way to connect with other craft minded people, and to get my Jewellery out to the world!

About how long does it take you to make each piece?

Most pieces take between 12 and 15 hours of work each to complete. Though they can take much longer depending on the complexity of the finished product.Where can we purchase your lovely pieces? At present my work is available on http://www.ku-ture.com and I am working towards my first solo exhibition at Gallery Nine by Five in Fremantle Western Australia, the work for that show will be available on the gallery’s website at: http://www.galleryninebyfive.com.au . I also have a mintd store but I won’t be posting any work there until after my exhibition.

Make sure you check out beth's up and coming work! and Thank you Beth for the interview; best of luck to you in your career!

Glamourize your Textbooks!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
So today was my first day of college classes. I can't really tell how tough they're going to be because today we just pretty much went over the syllabus. The other day I bought my books and it was like $280, freakin crazy huh? Anyways, I remember when I was little I'd always cover my books with brown paper bags & decorate them. Now that I have to buy my own (not to mention protect them!) I wanted a stylish yet functional way to cover my books. Thus the magazine bookcover! I could even break them out in the dining hall or campus green and no one would know I was secretly studying my little heart out!

Whats up Doc?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Ever since I saw Doc's on Lauren & Whitney in a spread of Teen Vogue I've been thinking about how the look just wouldn't translate in the real world. (I mean combat boots are soo nineties! I can't help but think of grunge bands and Skye from Clueless pre-makeover.) Then, when I was browsing through Elle's Street Style section I noticed a whole lot of stylish New Yorkers sporting their own combat boots. I'm not entirely sure what I think about this look.. I don't know if its been long enough that these boots are fashionable again. I can't imagine they'd be very flattering (or comfortable) on anyone.

If you want to give the ol' combat boots a run for their money I'd suggest pairing them with something ultra feminine like a poufy dress to keep them from making the outfit too rough and masculine. What does everyone think about them?

P.S. Everyone make sure to enter the Jansport Back to School contest..

Say hello to College!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Long time no post! I am finally up at school and it's even better than I could have imagined. I actually just got my laptop (I forgot it in the hustle and bustle of packing the car for move-in day!) As you can see above this is my tiny but cute dorm room. It's a little small, but it feels so cozy and homey that I have no complaints! My roommate is awesome and we get along great. I've already met tons of people up here.. Classes don't start until next Monday so we've had a lot of time to explore the campus.

I can tell this is the beginning of a new and exciting adventure!

Jansport Back to School Contest

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

[This contest is current open only to those in the U.S.]

If theres one thing that makes me feel like "back to school" it's getting a new backpack. I'll admit in recent years I've preferred carrying a large tote or purse for my books, but that's because I couldnt find any backpacks that matched my trendy style, everything just seemed boring and monotonous. But, i've found the perfect backpack to match my fashion and accompany my outfits! It's the perfect mixture of feminine with edge (It has roses on it, and if you loook verrry carefully you can see gray skulls in the background, I love it!).

Anyways, I have a fabulous contest for you all to gain a chance to win one of the new Big Student Packs by Jansport. They come in every style from plain to patterned. All you have to do is guess how many fashion magazines I can squeeze into that handsome backpack. Just leave your guess under the comments and I'll select the top 3 winners in a week.

Also, enter the contest on their facebook site for the chance to win a trip to Grand Canyon!

P.S. I leave for college TOMMOROW! wish me lots of luck!

I'd love a page in The Fashionista Diaries

So, I've started Tivo-ing The Fashionista Diaries on Soapnet and I have to admit I'm a teeny bit obsessed with it now. It's a show about six fashion assistants working to gain a career in the cuthroat world of fashion. Watch it.. I promised you'll get sucked in haha.

At Flirt Cosmetics Tina and Janjay have an amazing mentor in Kathleen Pierce the v.p. of Communications. The toughest she gets is going through make-up bags and critiquing the lack of Flirt! in their collection. She loans out a sample dress for Tina to wear for a night on the town. The girls get to work a party for the premiere of a cosmetic line by Vanessa Manillo.

At Jane Magazine Rachel and Andrew work with editor in chief Brandon Holley to come up with story ideas and are challeneged to each write an editorial piece for the september issue. The fact that Jane entrusts so much responsibility to them is amazing! Both end up getting bylines in the would-be september issue.

At Seventh House PR, the boss Mandie Erickson, is right out of the Devil Wears Prada, immediately critiquing Queens intern Nicole for wearing juicy couture on the job. Bridget on the other hand seems made to work in the industry, taking a psychopath socialite's condescending remarks in stride and working double time when Nicole calls in sick the entire first week.

What Every Girl Needs to Know about Diamonds but was Afraid to Ask

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
A wise Marilyn once said.. "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" and I couldn't agree with her more. Ever since I was in Amsterdam and toured a Diamond factory I'll admit I've had diamonds on the mind. When I think of diamond jewelry I usually think of Engagement Rings and Anniversary Gifts, but there are beautiful (and affordable) pieces that a girl doesn't need a special occasion to purchase or recieve. I posted some of my favorites above..I love how classy and timeless the diamond studs and studded bracelet are. On the opposite spectrum the heart key necklace and interlocking heart rings are trendy and chic.
The Four C's
The Four C's are what you need to look for when purchasing a diamond or piece of diamond jewelry
Cut-The shape the raw diamond is cut and polished into. Brilliance, Fire, and Facets depend on the cut of the stone. (My personal favorite is the square shaped Princess Cut)
Color- Although we are used to seeing diamonds as clear and colorless, they actually have several different levels of color. The less color in the diamond the more expensive it is.
Clarity- The measure of the ability of light to pass through the diamond. All diamonds have tiny flaws in them, but the higher the clarity the clearer the diamond.
Carat- The carat refers to the actual weight of the diamond. The heavier the diamond the higher the carat, thus larger rarer diamonds have higher carats.
Check out Abazias for more diamond fun including a Build Your Own Ring link to design your dream ring.

Desperately Seeking Mary Janes!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
One of my must-haves for fall are the lovely high heeled mary-janes. I love how adding a heel on them makes them go from demure to sassy! They're perfect for pairing with preppy collegiate clothing and sweet babydoll looks. I think Anna Sui did it perfectly in her F/W 2007 show by pairing tall knee socks with them. (Or go the Luichini route which have legwarmer type socks sewn into the shoes.. kinda cute and quirky). Go for a mary jane shoe in black patent leather for a classy look to pair with pencil skirts and skinny trousers. If you're feeling adventurous go for a colored shoe to add some spice to an outfit!

Gemtastic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

When i saw the bejeweled headbands and purses in Marc Jacobs' S/S 2007 show I fell in love. Ever since I was a little girl I had a penchant for all things jeweled and sparkly. Last night I was unpacking boxes and boxes of jewelry at the accessories counter of the retail store I work at and was pleased to pull out tons of necklaces with multicolored jewel pendants (definitely reminiscent of the Marc show!).

Yes, some may deem the look as tacky and eighties, but it can also look trendy and tasteful when worn right. Take a cue from Marc Jacobs and add some sparkle to your wardrobe!

A Fall Fashion Extravaganza

Finally i've been able to get online (my internet connection hasn't been working the last couple days)! I'm sitting here drinking a coconut creme pie latte at my favorite local coffee shop.

Last night my beauuutitful friends and I got together and they let me dress them up for a mini photo-shoot. I styled them in some of my favorite fall trends; Definitely an amateur photoshoot (i'm awful at picture taking but i love styling!), but it was a fun get-together before we all leave for college (next week!). I'd love some feedback :)

Scary Carrie!

Does anyone else find the new commercial for SJP's perfume, "Covet" really disturbing? I love her in Sex and the City and she has great style, but, this commerical is kind of scar to be quite honest! I've seen it on tv at least 5 times tonight, so they must really be promoting this perfume.

P.S. I got my hair cut & colored today and i love it, it's a big change & i can't wait for you all to see it!

Rebel Without a Cause

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

One of the trends that was all over the runway at recent shows (& i personally love in contrast to all the frilly feminine shapes that have been popular) is biker chick chic. Expect to see lots of studded handbags, scarves, and even dresses a la Burberry Prorsum. Keep the look from becoming too masculine by adding softer accents like lace, eyelet or chiffon. I'm evnisioning lots of black tights, leather motorycle jackets (i just bought one while i was in Florence!), and tall motorcycle boots toughened up with silver hardware. The Burberry F/W 2007 show is one of the best sources of inspiration for this trend.
