Teen Vogue Fashion U: an event I'll never forget!

My weekend at Teen Vogue's Fashion U was unforgettable! I stood five feet away from designers whose collections i've oogled over on style.com, asked them questions about how to get my start in the industry, and met so many girls who are obsessed with fashion as i am!
Okay.. enough blabbing.. let's get to the pictures!

The first night was a fashion show featuring Erin Fetherston's Go International Collection for Target. I was majorly lusting over those heart bags (and the people who were in her seminar were lucky enough to score one before they're even in stores!)

Saturday morning I woke up bright and early (wearing my Rebecca Taylor Dress as i've metioned I would be), and stood in line in the pouring rain to get in! Once i got in I recieved a quite amazing goody bag (dooney & bourke bag at that). I had no idea we would recieve anyyything, so that especially added to my excitement (it definitely more than totaled the amount we paid to get into Fashion U!)

My first seminar was with Rebecca Taylor, I loved her endearing New Zealand accent. She has an amazing story.. she came to NY with $600 and lived in a hostel while designing clothes. We learned that she seeks inspiration from her every day surroundings from girls on the street, to nature, to art books. She even noticed I was wearing one of her dresses and seemed giddy :)

My second seminar was with CFDA winner Doo.Ri whom was an interesting character. She seemed very intelligent and technical. She has overcome a lot as an upcoming designer; she couldn't afford a showroom in NY when she started so she worked out of the basement of her parent's cleaning business. She also worked for 6 years for Geoffery Beene before branching off on her own which i thought was interesting.

Next I got to take the tour of Teen Vogue's offices.. yeaaah i could pretty much live in that fashion closet! Mary-Kate Steinmiller (who's in the new TV issue)said that the Devil Wears Prada is actually a pretty accurate portrayal of life at a fashion magazine.. yikes! I don't know if i could handle being in that kind of a high pressure enviornment. Also, they told me that my college has a good reputation in the industry and at the magazine which is exciting/a relief for me!

(1. Mary-Beth (the fashion assistant) and the Stylist of Teen Vogue; 2. The Accessories office (heaven!); 3. The model booking office; 4. the FASHION CLOSET (cue hallelujah's); 5. the beauty closet!)

My 4th Seminar was with Cynthia Rowley who I absolutely adored. She showed us this picture of her at age 7 in the first dress she made! She was so endearing and down to earth telling us how she got started in the industry (an editor stopped her on a bus and asked her where she bought her jacket). She has never worked for anyone else and has had a long, successful career thus far. She also brought her little daughter with who was so adorable and sat on her lap and asked questions the whole time:)

Our final seminar was with Tim Gunn (ahhhh!) i love him! He's amazing. He talked to us about some of the F/W 08 collections and asked for our opinions on them. Talked about "his boys" at Proenza Schouler and how he worries for them because their career has skyrocketed right after their senior year at Parson's (their senior collection was purchased by Barney's!). He was just as charming in person, using his quirky colloquialisms and extensive vocabulary.

The perfect ending to the perfect day.. the Tiffany & Co Mocktail Party & showing of Seamless (a fashion film about 3 CDFA contestants). They had tiffany blue mocktails & pink mock cosmopolitans and then cute little h'ourderves were served! It was held at the Tribeca Cinema which was such an awesome venue. They had little popcorn tubs and teal&white jelly beans for us to snack on during the showing of Seamless! At the end we had a special suprise.. that came in a little teal box.. a Tiffany & Co. necklace, mine is a little silver taxi cab, the perfect memento for my trip!

Overall, Fashion U was a wonderful experience. I learned so much about the industry, heard from some very influential people, and met some awesome fashionistas! I would definitely go back if I had the chance!

Made in America

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

In my Social Problems class we've been learning all about the downfall of American manufacturers because they just can't compete with the foreign import prices. (American Workers average wage is 14.83 an hour, while in China the average wage is the equivalent of 68 cents an hour, thus it's a lot cheaper to have workers in foreign countries make products). As much as I love my bargains at Forever 21, Target, etc. our lecture has really got me thinking about where the clothing I buy is manufactured. It's important to buy American made products to support the struggling companies trying to compete in an unfair market.

American Apparel has taken this all into account and created a purely American made, sweatshop free label. Although I don't necessarily always feel like paying almost 20 dollars for a plain t-shirt, I know fully understand where my money is going and who it is supporting. I don't expect myself or anyone to buy purely American made products (that's nearly impossible in today's society), but I definitely would like to start paying more attention to where my clothing is manufactured as it will have a great affect on the quality and treatment of laborers.

Sisters by Chance.. Designers by Choice

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The Mulleavy sisters of label Rodarte, hail from Pasadena, California.. not exactly known as the fashion capital of the world. I was enchanted by an interview with them in a magazine I read recently. The girls, who named their line after their mother's maiden name, came to NYC with a suitcase full of designs. Neither had a fashion or design background, yet they were able to create elaborate, couture-like gowns to present to buyers and magazine editors. The sisters, who seem to be joined at the hip scored a nomination for a CFDA and have made a name for themselves in the competitive fashion industry.

I think their story is so inspiring.. they're living the dream. They seem like regular girls who were able to achieve the unbelievable.

Sock it to Me!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

As my trip to New York City for Fashion U quickly approaches (NEXT WEEKEND!!), i've been oogling over outfits from the new Sex and the City movie. In particular i love the knee socks that Patricia Field has been putting Carrie in. Wearing them paired with a mini dress & oversized cardigan i'm sensing could be a big look for this fall. I like that this look is not only fashionable but functional too, perfect for the mild winters by me.

La Petite Fashionista will be up and running in no time. The place I hosted my photos mysteriously shut down, so i'm trying to recover all my old posts!

Fashion Icon Halloween Costumes: Cher

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Ok, so Cher may not be a fashion "icon" persay, but she did cause somewhat of a fashion revolution in the nineties with Clueless. So this Halloween. break out your matching plaid skirt/blazer sets, pair them with a coordinating cardigan and white knee socks.. extra large cell phone for extra effect. Or you could go for the look on the cover of the movie, take one of this season's red body concious dresses and a big white boa and you're good to go. Haha gotta love the nineties!

All the Leaves are Brown

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I woke up today and something was different.. the air was cool and crisp, no more sticky humidtiy. It felt like autumn! Fall is my favorite season. Although the leaves don't really change color here, it's a refreshing change of weather. Thus, my latest lust is fall colors! I don't think i can see something burnt orange, deep red, or mustard yellow without thinking of autumn. I hope everyone is starting to feel the affects of fall. Yay for wearing cool weather clothes!

Fashion Icon Halloween Costumes: Marie Antoinette

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

So this is my second post for my Fashion Icon Halloween Costume Ideas.. a couple of people mentioned Maria Antoinette as a fashion icon and I most definitely agree. The look is achievable with an extra poufy dress, white pompadour and lacy fan. I thought the stuffed pug would be a cute addition.. One could even carry around a box of chocolates/slice of cake and repeat "Let them eat cake," for extra effect! (I read in a novel about her life that she didn't actually say that though?). Ever since the movie and my visit to Versailles over the summer I've been intrigued by Marie Antoinette. I think she'd make the perfect halloween ensemble as well!

Chanel goes Gangsta

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

So, I was browsing through the shows from Paris Fashion Week and I saw these amazing/ridiculous cardigans at the Chanel show. Kudos to Chanel for embracing hip hop culture. Even though a male model is sporting the cardigan, I think a girl could definitely sport the look; Achievable with a navy cardigan, dollar sign necklace.Although I don't think the look really went with the rest of the show the outfit is simple and a bit witty. I could definitely see Forever 21 copying this sweater.. Stay Gangsta Karl Lagerfield <3

Socialite mixed with Army Brat

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

As I was flipping though my CosmoGirl magazine (yes, i still get it, I'm not quite sure why my mom still renews the subscription haha?) I saw this great editorial of sort of an updated bohemian chic.

My favorite shot is this one of the party dress with an olive military anorak over it, paired with a mess of bangles. I think it's a very chic way to wear a fancy dress during the daytime and not look totally overdressed. This look is best with a longer jacket opposed to crop so it looks better with a dress. Also, you can't see in the picture but the dress/jacket are paired with this great pair of plum tights to add some more jewel tones in the mix.. so cute! This is something I could easily pull together from my closet and I plan on doing it immediately!

Fashion Icon Halloween Costumes: Holly Golightly

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

For the next issue of my Fashion Club's newsletter I'm writing an article about Fashionable Halloween Costumes, and I thought it'd make a perfect post for La Petite Fashionista. The first edition of Fashion Icon Halloween Costumes is for a Holly Golightly of Breakfast at Tiffany's getup.

The look is iconic and fairly easy to create. While other girls are dressed like sexy schoolgirls and policewoman, you will look classy and fabulous as the fashionable Holly Golightly. For extra effect you may carry around a teal tiffany's bag or coffee&croissant. I'm thinking I might go for this costume this Halloween:)

Does anyone else have any lovely fashion icon halloween costume ideas? I may feature one in an upcoming post/my article. Keep checking back for more fashion icon halloween costume ideas.
