A YSL Counterfeit Nightmare

Photobucket

I'm all about being inspired by runway collections and designer's creations, but I draw the line at exact duplications of someone's artistic talent. Forever 21 often has runway "inspired" pieces which are questionably ethic, but this is just wrong. EXACTLY duplicating the recently deceased Yves Saint Laurent's priceless Mondrian Dress and slapping a $23 price tag on it is just a fashion sin. The CFDA has been battling cases like this for a long time and hopefully designer's can someday rest knowing that their work will not be cheaply replicated and mass produced.

What would YSL think if he were around to witness this?

xoxo, lauren

Haha I'm going to go out on a tongue-in-cheek limb here and say that perhaps YSL wouldn't have minded at all. I mean, his dress replicated Piet Mondrian's iconic artwork as a dress pattern, so on some level he must understand. Incidentally, WendyB did a fantastic post on other Mondrian-inspired pieces back in June. You can find it here.

Wow, Lauren! That's crazy. I love forever21, but that's just insane.

I agree with you 100%, but can I just say that I think I like the forever21 dress better? The neck line is more flattering, in my opinion.

An original idea (or style) is hard to get these days.

mmh I know YSL created the dress orginally from inspiration from Piet Mondrians art work.Since then it has spurned quite a few copies but this has defo got to be the most blatant!

ummm i don't know....the YSL was originally created a long long time ago so there could be arguments for both sides....

The YSL version will forever be the best, no matter how many imitations come along.

I actually don't think this is as bad as a lot of their knockoffs. It's a little different from the YSL and of course YSL's was a tribute to Mondrian as Lisa points out. Mondrian is available as inspiration to everyone, and has been for a long time. I find it a lot more offensive when F21 knocks off a print that's associated with a single, current designer -- Anna Sui, for instance, though there are dozens of other victims!

although i am a bargain shopper, if i were a wonderful renown designer, i would havea problem with this!

i just think the timing of it is truly inappropriate and they made absolutely NO design alterations..

you can't rip off YSL! It's just plain wrong. It woulbe cool to do a Mondrian shoe though???

I definitely think Forever 21 has done worse ripoffs. Especially since YSL was inspired by Mondrian in the first place. And if I'm not mistaken, the dress was for sale before YSL passed away..if that makes it any better lol..

They definitely need to not go there. I mean the man is gone, this is so disrespectful. I love forever21, but sometime their blatant copying gets on my nerve. They just don't seem to be able to show any kind of tack!
