Looking Cute When it's Chilly for a Night Out!

At the end of the month I'm off to find the perfect apartment up north, and my trip just happens to coincide with New Year's Eve. This has left me with a major style debacle though; how do you look cute while going out but still stay warm when it's freezing outside? I'm used to spending my New Year's Eve in little black dresses with temperatures in the 70's so this is a huge change!
Looking Cute when its Chilly
In addition to a stylish and insulated coat, I've decided I need to find the perfect cute and comfortable sweater dress, a pair of fun tights (or two..), sparkly earrings, and a pair of high heeled boots. I know it's early to think about New Year's but with final exams and working retail during the craziest month, I know i'll be stressing!
What do you wear when you go out & still want to look cute when it's chilly?

xoxo, lauren

I've been dealing with below freezing temps for New years my whole life (DC) so I just wear tights and a long faux-fur coat to check in at coat check. If you're going to spend new years outside (like time square) then I would go for outfit #2 above :)

You seem right on! Just beware, when temperatures start dipping below freezing, lace tights aren't going to keep you warm for long. I employ the "dress cute and run" technique: I wear whatever I want to when I go out, try to park as close as I can, and run inside to warm up.

Good luck with your big move! You must be so excited.

Tights are the best way to help stay warm in the winter. The first pair look like they would be fun. I live in Winnipeg so i need to pull out tights like 8 months out of the year, so this is a post i can definitely appreciate!

Love the 3rd outfit. I might pair it with black ankle boots though. I'm sure you'll find something great to wear.

my picks are #1, #2, and #4, in that order, I love them all, #3's dress is beautiful and looks kinda warm even! ha! high heels are tretcherous in the icy snow covered sidewalks! When you're out for the night you can always take layers off, but you can't out more on than you already have with! ;)

Short dress, tights, cute boots, and one heckuva nice coat. It's all about the coat for the entrance, and then you can peel that off to reveal a cute slinky number. Don't forget a scarf!

I like the purple dress with the orange boot.

If your heart's set on wearing black lace tights in the cold, layer them over a brightly coloured opaque pair. Like one of the commenters said, they're not great for keeping your legs warm! But otherwise I really like the outfit ideas you've put together.

Cute post! I usually don't know what to wear when it's cold out. I want to look cute, but I'm too cold to dress up sometimes. HAHA. Thanks! Love the choices.

I also employ the "look cute and run" technique, but I often add a pair of tights for a little added warmth.

In my experience, my friends and I have dealt with the Wisconsin weather in several ways when going out:

-tights
-call ahead to get on bars/clubs lists so there's no waiting in line
-look cute and run (like several others have stated)
-cute dress and jacket (like leather or something that's not exactly warm but offers a bit of protection) and either check the jacket or put it on a chair if there's seating
-suck it up and drink to get warm once you're inside! (I tend to do this one rather a lot, :) )

P.S. Beware of snow banks when in heels! I can't tell you the number of times I've lost a heel because I've had to step in a snow bank to get to/from a car. Then you're tights are wet, your foot is freezing, and there's snow in your shoe once you dig it out!

Those options all are great, especially the one with the shearling ankle boots!

I have a tough time figuring this question out myself, and I've lived in the north my whole life! I feel like so often I have to sacrifice fashion for the cold weather (especially on nights out), or that I freeze to death to try and look cute!
A few years ago, I invested in a gorgeous white-wool long coat, which has seriously saved my life! Now I can wear (heavy) tights and dresses and not die of hypothermia. You're so fashionable, I know you'll be just fine combining the two! :)
xo, hope you had a great weekend, Lauren!

Sometimes when it's really cold and I wear tights I wear knee high socks for them and then add tall boots.
