Affordable & Chic Fall Decorating Ideas

From the fall leaves changing color around me to the pumpkin patches on the side of the road, Autumn is here! As much as I'd love to make my house look like something out of Martha Stewart, I just don't have the endless free time + money flowing to craft fancy decor.

I've rounded up some of my favorite ideas for inexpensive and stylish fall decorations and entertaining ideas.

(L-R):  washi tape pumpkins via Good Housekeeping // birch log centerpiece w/ candles via Sass Interiors// napkins & EAT tags // acorn candles via Slim Paley // metallic pumpkin placeholders via Stephanie Lynn //  mini pumpkin pies via One Charming Party // fall leaves in mason jars // fall ribbon wreath via High Heeled Hostess // silverware tied with velvet ribbon //

I'm totally loving these simple ideas that have huge decorative impact! Which is your favorite? Be sure to check out my post with my fall bucket list too!

Project Life

I was really excited this week when I was scouring pinterest for some daily inspiration and saw a page from a "Project Life" blogger. I was a hardcore scrapbooker back in the day Jocelyn , our moms & I would have all night scrapbooking nights and I'd spend hours documenting my memories into albums.

Naturally, as college got around, and the real world. and full time jobs, life just got a little more busy and complicated. Since a little kid I've always liked the idea of documenting life to be able to look back on later whether it was my year 2000 time capsule in elementary school or my goofy diaries which are hilarious to read and look back on.

So enough blabber, let me show you some of the inspiration that project lifers have been creating. I love the idea of taking an hour a week to pull together cute pictures from the week whether it was meals I cooked, a cute outfit, or a fun date with the boyfriend.

so many cute printables for your pages via the Kalil Life

the month in review via my scrapbook art

Anyways, I'm feeling totally inspired. Do I really want to have to go on facebook ten years down the road to  look back on my twenties? I think not. I'd much rather have a stylish recollection via my totally awesome soon to be project life book! SO excited to get started. Go HERE to read how to do that.

What's your favorite way to record memories? Photos, scrapbooks, instagram feed?

Farm Fresh: Veggie Picking & Canning

It's harvest time in Wisconsin, tomatoes and peppers are ripe for the picking and ready to get canned into salsas and sauces. My boyfriend's mom snapped some pictures of me in the garden and taught me how to make some of her famous canned salsa! I have a new appreciation for the homemade kind over the store bought now!

I've been really into the idea of buying fresh food, gardening, and canning. There's something that's so rewarding about eating a homemade meal with fresh ingredients. You'll see some more of this in issue #2 of La Petite Fashionista Mag!

These are some books I'm wanting to add to my collection that talk more about the subject, all from my go-to for pretty coffee table books, Anthropologie. (I swear I can't shop there without leaving with a book!)

What's your favorite thing to make from scratch? I make a mean pico de gallo!

LPF City Guides: Madison, WI

If you would have told me a few years ago that I would be leaving the balmy beaches and sunshine of Florida for "America's Dairyland" I probably would have told you that you were crazy! I have been coming to Wisconsin since I was little to visit family and have always loved the summers by the lake, friday night fish frys and down to earth Midwesterners. So, it's actually no surprise that it's been pretty easy to embrace my new hometown (now if only I can get use to shoveling snow!).

I have partnered with Apartment Guide to create a City Guide to Madison, WI. As an Apartment Guide Blog Partner, I will be sharing ideas to make your apartment feel like home & local tips from my new city. Madison is an amazing city, full of life, culture, fitness, and some deliciously midwestern meals (fried cheese curds anyone?).

Good Eats: The Old Fashioned is right next to the Capitol building and is famous for their uniquely wisconsin dishes like fried cheese curds (sort of like mozarella sticks, but BETTER). Mickies Dairy Bar is across from where the Badgers play & has been serving university students inexpensive & delicious breakfast for over 50 years. Sardine is a stylish seafood restaurant on the shores of the lake Downtown.

Shopping: Fromagination sells cheese-- which Wisconsin is famous for, a great place for souvenirs. Pop Deluxe sells fun decor & gifts like Jonathan Adler's Happy Chic collection- perfect for apartment decorating. Bop is the flagship store of and gives you a chance to see some of the site's beauties in person.

Sights to See: The Memorial Union is beer garden at the University of Wisconsin campus on the lake, it's a Madison landmark and recognized by it's signature colorful chairs. Be sure to try local favorite, New Glarus' Spotted Cow! Vilas Zoo is a free local zoo, it's small, but a great inexpensive way to spend the afternoon! The Dane County Farmer's Market borders the capital square downtown in warm weather months, perfect for scoring fresh local & affordable produce.

Happy Hour: Merchant is a trendy bar with bartender mixologists that craft unique cocktails and a truly unique menu of local specialties. State St. Brats is the perfect college bar with great drink specials and close to the university, don't forget to take your picture with the cows outside! Vintage Brewing Co. features an array of house-made brews & outdoor paitos- craft beers are as good as they come in Wisconsin!

Whether you're living, looking or moving, Apartment Guide offers tips on how to decorate your apartment and make the most of your space on the Apartment Guide blog.Moving to a new city is such an exciting opportunity. My best advice is to get yourself out there-- either find a local to show you around or find someone else new to the area that you can explore with!

I love adding little local details to give my new rental a homey feel whether it's specialty cheeses or a print from a local artist!   If you’re ready for a whole new space or looking to move, Apartment Guide has the photos, floor plans, features and tips to help you find the perfect apartment community.

Like” Apartment Guide on Facebook, tweet at  them @AptGuide on Twitter, “circle” them on Google+ and follow them on Pinteres for real-time tips and updates on how to make the most of your small space. And feel free to tweet me any questions as well on @lpfashionista!

What are your favorite things about the city that you live in?

5 Ways to Keep Your Balance in Life

My little sister, Allie is my best friend and my go-to for questions on live, life & well-being.We both got a tattoo together when she turned 18 with the Hawaiian words for "keep your balance". I love this everyday reminder to keep things in perspective and the fact that I share it with my sister!

She is here to share five ways to "keep your balance" in life!

1. Develop a mantra for when things get tough
Sounds corny, but positive self-talk works wonders for your self-esteem.
Mine is: I’m strong, I’m passionate, I’m beautiful, and I’m worth it!

2. Pursue the things you love
If you love the things you are deeply invested in; school, work, projects- you’ll enjoy spending time on the effort you put in, and you will excel. Find a way to create success from whatever makes you happiest.

3. Exercise
Take time every day to give thanks to your body for all of the work that it does. Clear your head, and rejuvenate your mind. Whether you’re a yogi, runner, or love to Zumba, get out there and let those endorphins flow freely… especially if it’s a stressful day!

4. Surround yourself by positive people
Environment is everything. It’s hard to blossom in a stifling atmosphere. Be around those you admire and adore; people whom will better you as an individual.

5. ALWAYS remember to treat yourself
I love going to the coffee shop for a latte and getting my work done. Treating yourself makes the monotonous parts of life much more enjoyable- A reward for your hard work. Whatever your guilty pleasure is, you deserve it!

Allie launched an etsy store this week of boho bracelets handmade with love that give back 10% of every sale to the Center for Young Woman's Health in Boston, MA. She is truly an inspiration to me. She recently transferred to Smith College to spread her wings, entrepreneurial spirit and pursue a degree in Women's studies.

I wanted to share a few of my favorites from her shop, Keep Your Balance (I  helped design her logo!). They are all incredibly affordable, starting at just $12.00!

Check out more on her etsy shop and get 10% off this week using code "spreadthelove". What's your mantra for life??

Apple Picking Afternoon

Well, I was already able to cross a few things off my fall bucket list this weekend! My boyfriend's family lives on a lot of untouched land with hundred year old apple trees and enough trails through the woods & countryside to walk for hours.  His mom was nice enough to take a few pictures of our apple picking afternoon on Sunday. Look forward to many apple recipes coming soon!

I feel at home out on the farm! I borrowed an oversized flannel shirt & his mom's cowboy boots for my apple picking ventures since the heels I was wearing just weren't cutting it. I love how perfectly fall these pictures feel. We ended our apple picking labors with a glass of wine (a surprise- hidden in a cold well along the trail) under the old oak trees.  Thank you to my lovely boyfriend for being a good sport!

What's your favorite apple recipe? I'm going to need a few for all these apples! I love that you don't have to worry about pesticides since they all grow naturally there as they have for decades!

Style Icon Staples

One of the things I love most about fashion is that some things become so iconic they will never go out of style. The classical beauties that wore them will go down in fashion history and women will never stop wearing some of the pieces they made famous. I'm a huge fan of vintage style, an wanted to highlight a few of my favorite style icons & their staples.

Jackie O & her Jack Rogers, Audrey Hepburn & her ankle pants, Marilyn Monroe & her red lipstick, Brigitte Bardot & her breton stripes, & Grace Kelly's camel coats are style staples that will never go out of style sitting in your closet!

Jack Rogers Navajo Sandals a la Jackie Onassis Kennedy

Ankle Pants ala Audrey Hepburn

Red Lipstick a la Marilyn Monroe

Breton Striped Tee a la Brigitte Bardot

Wool Camel Coat a la Grace Kelly

Who is your style icon & their iconic wardrobe staple?

Grilled Cheese, Please!

Ever since it's been starting to feel like fall around here, I've been wanting warm & delicious comfort foods. Lately, grilled cheese has been my go-to for a simple but yummy meal. I love the idea of taking a simple meal and making it a little bit more gourmet by switching up the cheeses & accompaniments.

There are a few of my favorite gourmet grilled cheese combos that i'm wanting to try:

Interested in making one of these gourmet grilled cheese for yourself-- here are links to the recipes:

-Caprese Grilled Cheese: This sandwich has italian flavors- basil, mozzarella & tomato
-Gruyere & Green Apple Grilled Cheese- the perfect mix of sweet & savory
-Jalapeno Popper Grilled Cheese: Spicy jalapeno & creamy cheese in sandwich form
-Bacon, Peach, Gouda Cheese Grilled Cheese- bacon and melty cheesy goodness.. need I say more

P.S. I think I can call myself an official Wisconsinite once I write a blog post that revolves around cheese! ;)

What's your go-to comfort food when it's chilly outside?

Fashion Week Faves: Tory Burch

In browsing fashion week runway shows I always a have a few designers I know I will always love. Tory Burch is one of those designers. I so admire the way she's built a lifestyle brand & household name for her line. She is an incredible business woman! Her new collection did not disappoint, it combined her classic American sensibility with a global perspective.

images courtesy of

Her description of the Tory Burch girl reminds me so much of myself. I'm as All-American as they come but have a never-ending travel bug, love to  immerse myself in other cultures, and collect souvenirs from my journeys. Tory Burch's SS13 collection combined skinny nautical stripes and classic eyelet fabric with Moroccan inspired smoking slippers, tie dye fabric hand dyed by artisans in Ghana and global-centric statement jewelry.

I love the idea of someday having a home filled with treasures from world travels! I love how home decor trends are looking to the globe for inspiration as well.

Whose collections have you been loving so far?

LPF's Fall Bucket List

Growing up in Florida, we never really had a true "fall", the weather cooled down a little bit, but no changing leaf colors, autumn coats, & apple picking. So, in relocating to the Midwest it's definitely the season I've embraced the most! I like when the air starts turn to turn crisp & the leaves begin turning red and orange.

This year I'm determined to cross everything off my fall bucket list (& working on LPF Mag's November/ December issue will help too!)

images via: one // two // three // four // five // six // seven // eight // nine

So, what's on your fall bucket list this year? I obviously can't wait for pumpkin picking/decorating, and Thanksgiving baking and all of the fun that the season entails too! I'd love to take a mini-roadtrip once the leaves change colors. Fashion wise, I'm looking to invest in a colorful coat + comfy boots!

I am truly amazed by the speed of fashion news + runway show coverage these days. When I was younger I never dreamed that I'd be able to stream live shows, see pictures of clothes seconds after hitting the runway & read up to the minute coverage of all the fashion week buzz. Social media is amazing (not that i'm biased or anything ;)!

I've collected some of my favorite instagram shots from the first couple days of fashion week to share from some NYFW-attendee tweeters.

It's my goal to make it to fashion week some day and cover it for LPF! In the meantime, i'm living vicariously through my fellow fashionista & blogger friends! P.S. did you see that stack of Louis Vuitton luggage that @topshop instagrammed-- I can only imagine that being Victoria Beckham's wardrobe for the week!

Have you been catching any fashion week runway show coverage on twitter/blogs/instagram, etc?

Game Night & Happy Hour Pairings

Call me a nerd, but sometimes I love a good scrabble & wine night. It's nice to disconnect from computers and cell phones and enjoy time with friends, a board game and a little imbibing! These are a few of my board game & happy hour pairings.

Lucky for me I have friends who like doing the same. Break out a board game at your next party, I promise it will provide lots of laughs and an inexpensive night in. I think I need to start a collection of favorites to have on hand when guests come over.

What's your favorite board game?

Dress Codes Decoded: Business Professional Attire

In college, I loved being the go-to for fashion questions. It was always so much fun being stylist & trusted fashion "expert" for my friends. I still love to answer your burning fashion questions when they come in my inbox- feel free to send me one anytime.

A friend Sara from high school had some questions regarding business professional style, which is super relevant for everyone interviewing for jobs and internships, or working in a professional atmosphere:

"I am about to graduate law school and enter the professional world  and I am really struggling to make the transition to "professional business attire." and would love any tips. I already have very little style and have found that all professional clothes are sooo expensive! Even the slightest tips will help!"

I've compiled some of my favorite looks that can be mixed and matched and still be very professional & will have some tips for finding business-y clothes that are affordable too!
Dress Codes Decoded: Business Professional Attire
Just stumbling upon this post? It's been updated with New Links for 2017 to similar products!

Truth be told, it can be tricky to incorporate your individual style or color into a business professional wardrobe. Do it with small touches- a peachy lipgloss you love, a bold bag you carry into work or on your lunch break, a pair of sassy stud earrings hidden underneath coiffed hair. The best way to know what you can get away with wardrobe-wise is to observe (another important business skill anyhow!)

So now that we've told you what to wear & some basics of business professional. Where can you buy the clothes (& not spend an arm and a leg)?

There are definitely some things you should splurge on for quality & the amount it will be on rotation in your wardrobe; like a great fitting black & gray pant. Or if you're in a very conservative work atmosphere- a flattering suit.Once you know a brand whose fit you like, buy multiple colorways of the style. A great pair of shoes that are comfortable too are essential- especially when running around as a newbie on the job. Save money by picking up blouses on discount and cardigans out of season or on markdown.

Great business-professional & stylish brands (many offer student discounts- be sure to ask!)

Discount retailers to look for stylish office clothes:

I hope this helps decode the Business Professional dress code-- feel free to leave more questions or suggestions in the comments!
