DIY Party Hats & Pink Popper Cocktail

Today we have a guest post from one of the most creative & chic people I know, Sarah, of Events Uncorked. Just in time for New Year's Eve, she has a fabulous DIY for party hats & champagne cocktail! Be sure to check out her DIY gifts & Beer Tasting party in the latest issue of LPF Mag!

New Year's Eve is always one of my favorite holidays. It gives me an excuse to get all dressed up and drink champagne until my heart's content. It also requires the wearing of a really ridiculous hat which I'm all about. But instead of buying a cheesy one at the store this year, I opted to make my own chic glittery version.

With the right amount of sparkle and no annoying elastic strap under the chin, I might wear this hat to celebrate all occasions while sipping on this Pink Popper. A mix of champagne (or prosecco), blood orange soda, and St. Germain, this celebratory cocktail is not to sweet and has just the right amount of bubbles. Here's the how to on the hats and the cocktail!

Chic DIY Party Hats
 :: Supplies ::
        Glittered Scrapbook Paper
        Silver Tinsel
        Plastic Headbands
        Hot Glue

:: Directions ::
        1. Begin by finding the center point on the bottom back side of the scrapbook paper. Draw an 8" line from the center mark to the edge. Repeat from the center line to the other edge. Draw and rounded edge connecting the two lines.
        2. Cut out stencil and trace on remaining sheets of scrapbook paper. Cut the tip off.
        3. Place a dab of hot glue in the top corner and connect to the other side. Run a line of hot glue down the inside of the top piece and fold over to connect.
        4. Run hot glue along the bottom edge of the hat and attach tinsel. Cut a 2" piece of tinsel and roll into a ball, attaching the end with hot glue. Glue to the top of the hat.
        5. Place two dabs of hot glue on opposite sides of the inside of the hat and attach to headband. Let dry and wear!

Pink Popper
:: Ingredients ::
        2.5 oz Blood Orange Soda
        1 oz St. Germain
        Champagne or Prosecco

:: Directions ::
        Mix blood orange and St. Germain in the bottom of a flute. Fill the remainder of the glass with champagne and enjoy!

Happy New Year Everyone! Can't wait to share with you all the stylish things in store for La Petite Fashionista this year & thank you Sarah for the awesome guest post.

Merry Christmas from Florida!

I am so excited to spend Christmas at home in Florida with my family, and have my boyfriend visit my home for the first time. Christmas in Florida is different than anywhere else in the world-- instead of snowman building, we build sand castles.. we put lights on our palm trees, and it's not unusual to spend Christmas Eve watching the sunset at the beach.

It's not a snowy white traditional Christmas, but I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

I am so in love with these vintage Florida Christmas portraits from the Florida State Archives.  It perfectly evokes a classic coastal Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you all!

How to: Look Cute in Cold Weather

Today I experienced my first snow storm ever. Growing up in Florida i'm not versed in snowman building, shoveling, or winter dressing. So, it's been a whole new experience for me! The power went out for long periods of time, but I still managed to enjoy my first snow day!

enjoy hot apple cider at the local bar (the only place open within walking distance!)

I always see lot of stylish winter fashion inspiration, but rarely any for the really cold weather that we get in the Midwest and other parts of the country. So i've pulled together some of the pieces I think are essential to looking stylish in really cold weather and snow (it is possible)! I actually worked in outerwear merchandising for a year so I have some great background on the subject!

How to: Look Cute in Really Cold Weather
the essentials:
  • lightweight down jacket: these packable pieces, are great for layering and stowing away in a bag, but also offering maximum warmth while still lightweight.
  • cute boot socks: will keep tootsies warm & toasty in the snow or indoors
  • fur lined parka: these military style parkas are super warm, but stylish too with fur trim hoods and olive green
  • waterproof boots: these sorel snow boots were the best investment I made when I moved to the frozen tundra, they keep feet warm & dry, and are actually stylish too
  • down coat: when I first moved here, I insisted I would never buy a puffy down coat, but they are seriously the warmest thing you can wear- and you can find some flattering feminine fits
  • fleece lined tights: cold wind cuts through regular tights and leaves you freezing when you're wearing dresses & skirts, a fleece lined pair will keep you from shivering all night!
  • warm & toasty boots: everyone loves ugg boots because they keep feet so warm, but I hate wearing the same thing as everyone else-- these boots are a great update
  • chic knit hat: an accessory that is functional too, for keeping your ears warm!
  • colorful ski jacket: a ski jacket is a colorful layering piece on or off the slopes. choose a style that is "fully seam sealed" which means it is 100% waterproof, essential for wet snow
I've also pinned some of my favorite snowy weather appropriate looks from these stylish ladies

It's definitely all about layering when it comes to looking cute in cold weather! What are your essentials to staying warm, but looking stylish?

Try this Trend: Colorful Plaid & Statement Necklaces

One of my go-to outfits lately has been throwing on a colorful paid shirt & statement necklace- if i'm feeling extra bold, a pair of  mint cords too! I love the combination of all of my favorite fall trends into one brightly hued outfit!

Check out my daily outfits on my la petite fashionista instagram!

This is my favorite interpretation of the plaid & statement necklace look- so simple, but boldly styled!  The trick to wearing this trend is to either pick a neutral colored statement necklace, or one that ties into one of the colors in the plaid.

What's your favorite plaid pick? And admit it- how big is your statement necklace collection? (I love them! such an easy way to dress up an outfit).
