Best Books for a #GirlBoss

I cannot believe that a year ago, working in the corporate world, the idea of being my own boss seemed so far out of reach.. and now I'm a few days from launching my first round of the "Social Media with Style Workshop"! My #GirlBoss journey is only just beginning, but I'm so grateful to be pursuing something I'm so passionate about- helping others find their blogging bliss & social media success!

I love being a part of the blogging community because it seems like everyone is a whole lot like me- ambitious, creative, and fully embracing the creative process. This tee from Midwest fashion line, Maverick Hill says it best- "Dreams Don't Work Unless You Do". It won't always be easy, you might have to work 80 hours a week so you don't have to work a 40-hr per week job, but if your heart is in it..  you can make those dreams happen.

Dreams Don't Work Unless You Do - Tee by Maverick Hill

Since I first set off on this entrepreneurial journey I've been trying to soak up every ounce of wisdom I can- listening to podcasts & audiobooks, reading books, going to conferences.

I wanted to share a few of the books on my #girlboss reading list- all written by women for women to inspire, motivate, and give you just the kick in the butt you need to go work for those dreams.

  3.  Thrive: Arianna Huffington talks about what's more important than money & power to feeling truly successful & how essential it is to strike a balance as to not achieve burnout.
  4.  Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead Sheryl Sandberg, CEO of Facebook encourages women to "sit at the table", seek challenges, take risks & pursue their goals.

Favorite Things

Isn't it funny how throwing on some pink lipstick & gold bow takes an ordinary Thursday from drab to fab? It's life's little details that are instant day-makers! For me, it usually starts with a good cup of coffee (& loads of cream) that takes me from a half asleep zombie to #girlboss mode, ready to take on the day!
This metallic bow is from fellow #girlboss, Gina Made It. It's made in America & part of a fabulous collection of fabulously chic headbands, hairties & my favorite- bun bows!
Pink Lipstick + [Gina Made It] Gold Bun Bow

Gameday Glam: Florida State Seminoles

I can't even tell you how excited I am for the start of college football season this weekend. I never thought I'd be a crazy football fan, but here I am! Some of my absolute favorite college memories involve watching the Noles play at Doak Campbell Stadium (and that was WAY before we were National Champions)!

Lucky for me in Tallahassee gamedays mean dressing up- not just in your favorite sports team's t-shirt, but glamming it up for gameday in your team colors. It's a southern thing, I hear ;) You better believe I will be watching my Seminoles play this weekend in all garnet & gold... literally the most excited person in Wisconsin.

Florida State Seminole ladies, you're in luck. I've rounded up some gorgeous garnet & gold for your gameday style:
Florida State: Glam Gameday Style
Shop the FSU Seminoles Looks:
Fear the Spear Tank- Twelve Saturdays | FSU Cowboy Boots | Alex and Ani Bracelet

You know I can't resist sharing a few of my favorite gameday looks through the years. One of my favorite pieces has to be the Seminoles skirts my mom sewed for my sister & I! Usually cowboy boots are my go-to for gamedays- comfortable & perfectly southern!

Regardless of which team you're cheering for- be sure to check out our Guide to Gameday from our first issue of La Petite Fashionista Mag! It's full of  tailgating inspiration from Events Uncorked & recipes from Saucy Jocey's Kitchen.

Are you a college football fan too? How do people dress for watching your team play?

Making Waves

My go-to dress for transitioning from summer to fall? A belted long sleeve tunic dress, like this beauty from ShopbellaC! It's comfortable, chic & equally as cute with pink high heels as it will be with boots & tights come the cooler months. I'm also a sucker for chevron prints. I love ShopbellaC.. hellooo gorgeous & affordable fashion (be sure to check out the discount code at the bottom of the post)!
Also, can we please look at how goofy my smile gets when Kyle's taking my outfit picture? I start laughing and half the pictures we take are wide-mouthed goofy grins ;)

Perfectly Prim

I spent my Saturday morning hitting up all of our local thrift stores looking for some furniture + décor pieces. When I was in high school I volunteered at one & loved being the first one to score pretties as they came in the door. I even organized a charity fashion show using all pieces from the thrift store. I always take a peek at the clothes to see if I can find anything fabulous.
I hit the thrifting jackpot this weekend and found some seriously gorgeous pieces (I gave a little peek on instagram) including this striped tank with lace collar detail. This outfit felt perfectly prim especially with the vintage scarf turned bracelet, lace collar detail & pink lips.

I'm a big proponent of cleaning our your closet & donating to your local thrift store- and saving $ & helping to give back by shopping there too. My favorite thrift store in Madison? St. Vinny's! I've found tons of gems there including vintage glassware for entertaining & fashionable finds.
Check back soon for my guide to thrift store shopping & finding the diamonds in the rough. Have you ever shopped at a thrift store?

Glam DIY Bulletin Board

I was getting a major DIY bug this week- especially for my #girlboss office! I spotted a set of 3 burlap canvases at Michael's for $3.00 and decided it would make the perfect DIY bulletin board. I am really digging the "rustic glam" look- so I figured that a nailhead look with pushpins would give it a more elevated look.
Adding all of those pushpins was pretty time consuming- but I was really happy with the final look of it! It will be perfect for over my desk. Right now I have it filled with an inspirational Rifle Paper card, to do list & some memories (YES, I'm that girl who saves her date night ticket stubs!)
This was a super easy & affordable DIY project & cost about $5.00 total! I'd definitely recommend it for someone looking for a simple Saturday "crafternoon" project. It would be equally as great for DIY dorm décor as it would the office!
I'm off to happy hour with the girls! Enjoy your weekend y'all!

When I first heard Carolina Alvo's mission, I knew we were stylish kindred spirits. At 5'0 I know what it's like to never be able to buy a pair of regular length denim off the rack (no lie.. I end up buying cropped pants so they'll be full length on me), proportions that are all wrong, and don't get me started on the comments from people. I would be one happy girl if I never have to hear "you're SO short" uttered in relation to my petite stature!
CEO & Founder, Carolina Misano Alvo
Carolina Alvo is on a mission to change all of that. 50% of women in the US are petite (5'4 or under), yet it's nearly impossible to find petite clothing that isn't just a cropped down version of the regulars What few petite clothing does exist tends to be super outdated or unflattering. Carolina is launching a line of clothing for petites, made by petites - specifically basics that are wardrobe essentials and surprisingly hard to find for petite women. She even has a Kickstarter campaign to produce the perfect petite dress.
I had the opportunity to talk to Carolina on the phone & we both laughed over stories expressing our frustration over shopping as a petite woman and following your entrepreneurial pursuits. I think what resonated with me most was the movement that #PetiteIsPowerful that she wants to convey. So often petite women are quite literally looked down upon & sometimes our height even becomes a point of embarrassment. She wants everyone to know that petite is powerful- embrace it!
I love talking to fellow women entrepreneurs so I had to ask her for her advice. She said that the fear of failing is the hardest thing to overcome as an entrepreneur and pursuing your passion- ignore it! Also, do small experiments to test your product with your target market before you get too deep into your idea. Favorite business book? Anything by Seth GodinDelivering Happiness- about the founder of Zappos.
Go check out Carolina Alvo's kickstarter campaign & fellow petite girls- share the #petiteispowerful message!

Preppy Pink & Green

When I go shopping I tend to gravitate first to all things pink. Take a peek in my closet and it might resemble Elle Woods' in Legally Blonde. When I stopped by the Francesca's Friends & Family Sale I was on a mission to step outside of my fashion comfort zone & this preppy green trellis print was exactly what my wardrobe needed!
The shopping event was a ton of fun.. I mean cake pops + discounts and I'm there! Did you see my insta snap from the event? I asked the manager to take my picture. I'm such an embarrassing blogger! I love shopping at Francesca's because it's both trendy and affordable. It's one of my go to spots for fun patterned dresses & accessories galore. When I was in the store I was obsessing over the printed kimonos & bow back blouses for Fall!
This is how I styled my new pieces from Francesca's in my #ootd!

I love how preppy the green trellis print looks paired back to a  hot pink purse and pink & green statement necklace! I think it will be a great piece to take into fall by pairing with a pair of tan knee high boots & long cardigan!

Cake Pops!
This is my favorite snap from the event (it even made it onto the Francesca's instagram page!). I"m still craving those delicious cake pops!
What color do you want to add into your closet to take you out of your wardrobe comfort zone?

Stylish Support

Last week I got an invitation for a special bra fitting event at Kohl's. Truth be told, I've always heard that statistic that "80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size" but was pretty sure I was one of the 20% who had it right, but I thought I'd put my trust in the experts.

My bra fitter completely surprised me when she told me I should be wearing a cup size smaller than the bra I came to the store in. I told her I'd have to see it to believe it. We tried on quite a few different styles, band widths, and cup sizes.. and she was right. I ended up with a super flattering bra in a smaller size than I thought I was, and full faith in bra fittings.

There's nothing like wearing a bra that fits well to make you feel confident and beautiful. I picked up this coral colored dress from the ELLE collection at Kohl's while I was there to go with my new bra and left the store feeling like a whole new woman!

I definitely feel my most confident when I'm wearing a colorful fit & flare dress that highlights all the right places- and the perfect bra is key to making this look come together!

Back to School Outfit Inspiration

Not going to lie, one of the things I miss most about being in school (besides my crazy fun college years!) is an excuse to go back to school shopping. I'd always challenge myself to see how many outfit combos I could come up with and ways I could wear each piece I purchased.

I like to purchase a mix of pieces- a chambray shirt, cute graphic tee, colorful skirts, a go-to pair of jeans & pair of chinos that can be dressed up or down. Don't forget about a pair of comfortable & chic shoes and the accessories that give an outfit the perfect finishing touch! Since I'm a post-grad, I'm just going to live vicariously through all of my readers still in school (and add a few of these pieces to my fall shopping list).

Hot Pink + Navy

Summer's not over- just need to make that clear ;) Somehow it feels everyone's ready to press fast forward to fall - but thankfully  Summer's not over andwe still have a few more weeks of warm weather bliss. So let's enjoy every moment of these next few weeks!

I'm a sucker for a pop of color. The hot pink in this embroidered blouse paired back to cobalt is perfectly summery- especially paired back to my favorite Lizzibeth Tassel Necklace. Lizzi donates 15% of each sale of a Tassel Necklace to a Charity of the Month. How awesome is that?

Stylish Creativity & Organization with Sharpie

This shop is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group® and Sharpie, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia  #StaplesBTS

A lot of people have asked me about the creative process for blogging. Like how after blogging all this time I'm still able to come up with new ideas for blog posts. There's a lot of places I like to look for to get inspiration- but sometimes the best is just to get it all organized on paper. Today I'm sharing I use my favorite markers from Sharpie to get inspiration & create my blog editorial calendar.

It seems like as a new entrepreneur I'm always at Staples (no complaints here! ;). Staples is my go-to for picking up office supplies & my desk is never without Sharpie markers- the more colorful the better. I love using colorful markers to get all my thoughts on paper (& love working outside at coffee shops!)

Creativity + Organization for Small Biz + Bloggers w/ Sharpie

Let me take you through my creative process to get organized for La Petite Fashionista!

1. I start by brainstorming ideas- usually this involves lots of doodles.  Write it all down with your Sharpie markers. Get creative, use lots of color, and put down anything that comes to mind during this "brain dump" activity (grab my printable blog brainstorm doc here)

Creativity + Organization for Small Biz + Bloggers w/ Sharpie

2.  Next I start to organize my thoughts into an editorial calendar. Mapping out the next month's blog topics. It's a great way to visualize that I have a mix of fashion, entertaining & interior design themes.

Creativity + Organization for Small Biz + Bloggers w/ Sharpie | Free Blog Brainstorm Printable

3.  Once I have everything mapped out, I also like to add in my daily blog traffic as a way to track progress! Even better- set a goal for yourself! I love a good challenge!

Creativity + Organization for Small Biz + Bloggers w/ Sharpie

Lucky for you the Sharpies Fine & Ultra Fine Tip Markers are on sale right now at Staples (while supplies last)! I love the Ultra Fine Tip Sharpie Markers for writing, the fine tip are perfect for adding pops of color and boldness. I'm partial to LPF colors (neon pink, turuqoise & metallic gold!)

I'm thankful for the opportunity to do something that allows me so much creativity & constant inspiration. One of the fun part of being a small business owner? Shopping for office supplies.. it's like the Girl Boss version of back to school shopping.. and that is an idea I can get behind!

How do you like to put your ideas to paper?

Latest Lust: Mid-Century Modern Decor

As I've mentioned oh.. just a few times before. It's really freaking hard to compromise on interior design when you and your guy both have strong & differing points of view. Thankfully, there are a few things we both can agree on.. reclaimed wood, graphic art prints, & mid-century furniture. We've been itching to finally get rid of our outdated  armoire in favor of something more modern.

After a jaw dropping trip to the furniture store ($1,000 for a new dresser.. not in my budget!)- I've been determined to find something more affordable. Then, like it was meant to be- we saw a perfect mid-century dresser on the side of the road of a local consignment store.. for $100. We bought it on the spot!

Ever since then I've been pinning away Mid Century Modern design inspiration for our home.

Latest Lust: Mid-Century Modern Design

Images: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

I'm obsessed with all of the Mid-Century style furniture at West Elm right now (& would love to someday splurge on an Eames lounger from Design Within Reach!):

If you've heard the term "mid-century" thrown around, but aren't exactly sure what it means, don't worry! It was a design period from the 40's to late 60's characterized by clean lines, graphic patterns & geometric pieces. Mad Men has made this design style incredibly popular!

I think one of the trickiest things about mid-century era furniture can be ending up with a room that looks like it belongs in another decade. It's all about balance- pair it back to super modern lighting, arts & prints to keep it mid century modern rather than like walking into an antique store! Thrift stores, estate sales & antique stores are a great place to look for pieces from this era.

What's the best thrifting/antique/garage sale gem you've ever found?
