Cozy Buffalo Plaid & Snow Boots

After spending the last week in the Florida sunshine I was pretty okay with the lack of snow this winter has brought us. But then, we got a snowstorm and everything was a pretty winter wonderland.. and I didn't seem to mind so much. I happily took my Sorel boots out of storage and I think the pure joy on my face in the first picture pretty much says it all!

I can't believe New Year's Eve is already here! I'm so exhausted from the excitement of travel and the holidays that I'm really looking forward to a low key home cooked meal with Kyle & family. Is it bad that I just want to spend all weekend in my pajamas reading all the books I got for Christmas and filling out my new Emily Ley planner?

I'm pretty sure this buffalo plaid flannel is the next best thing to P.J.'s!

Buffalo Plaid Flannel, Cozy Faux Fur Scarf & SOREL Snow Boots
Cold weather chic in buffalo plaid & pink gloves.

Snow day style in buffalo plaid flannel & cozy faux fur

Warm in cozy in a down jacket & buffalo plaid flannel shirt.

What I'm Wearing: Cozy Buffalo Plaid
Black & White Buffalo Plaid Flannel: Kohl's (similar) | Jeans: Paige Denim | Snow Boots: SOREL (similar) | Faux Fur Infinity Scarf: Kohl's (on sale for $19!) | Pink Gloves: Michael Kors

Can you believe I'm coming up on my 5 year anniversary of living in Wisconsin? It's a small miracle that this Florida girl is surviving and thriving in cold weather. I think I owe it all to my trusty down coats & waterproof snow boots. Nothing keeps you warmer when it's snowy and frigid and you have a million errands to run! Lucky for you winter came late this year, so you can score some great deals on chic coats and boots.

I've rounded up a few of my favorites for you here:

I hope everyone has a happy New Year's Eve. I can't wait for 2016!

My Focus Word for 2016

After two weeks off from blogging (inadvertently) & a relaxing and unplugged week at home, I'm feeling so fired up for 2016! My parent's cable & internet went out while we were home in Florida for the holidays and what started off as a frustration ended up being a total blessing in disguise. It made more time for catching up with family over coffee, conversation and breaking out my dad's beloved movie collection.

It gave me some time to reflect on my word for 2015: presence. Although I still have much room for improvement I think I made some big strides this year. I grew to love the mantra "progress not perfection". For me that meant less blogging during the week and more enjoying simple moments with Kyle, waiting until after dinner to Instagram our delicious meal (seriously, it can wait- enjoy the people you're with!), and learning that it's okay to only say "yes" to the things that make your heat sing!

Although I have a new word for 2016, presence is one that I hope to continue to make an important part of my life. For 2016, I've decided my word of focus will be: create.

Focus Word for 2016: Create

I chose "create" as this year's word because it's something I hope to do more of in the coming year.  I think creativity is something I often push aside when life gets busy. Too many emails not enough time to break out our adult coloring books and chill-  am I right? But on the contrary, when I'm able to turn off my brain from work stuff and make something, it has a positive impact on every aspecft of my life.

Kyle & I will be DIY-ing as much as possible for our wedding and I'm looking forward to being able to look around on our big day and remember all the love that went into each project. I think creating even goes beyond the typical sense. This year I'll be working on a website and brand revamp, fun new workshops, and continuing to declutter and simplify our home.

Make It Happen Power Sheets from Lara Casey for 2016 Goal Setting

I listened to an inspiring webinar from Emily Ley & Lara Casey and found it very uplifting to hear that there are so many people that struggle to find time to do it all. I'll be working through Lara's Power Sheet Workbook this year and can't wait to keep the reflection going all year long.

I like thinking about goal-setting in this sense rather than just making it to the gym more often. The "one word" goal really worked for me in 2015.

Have you thought of what yours may be in the new year?

xoxo, lauren

P.S.  If you're looking for a fun way to kick off blog or business planning for 2016, I'm going to be speaking on a panel at Madison's Dream Bank (on 1/26) about the biggest new internet marketing trends. They will also be livestreaming the event, so you can join in no matter where you live. Register for the free event here!

Windy City Weekend

Kyle & I made our annual trip to Chicago last weekend and other than the unseasonably warm temperatures it didn't disappoint! I'm a big fan of the weekend getaway- especially if it's within driving distance. My fellow Midwesterners, is there any cities we should be adding to our list (I think I'd love Traverse City & Minneapolis)?

I'm sharing a few of my favorite snapshots & stops to make when we travel there during the holidays! Soon enough we'll be traveling again, back to Florida to spend some time with my family for Christmas.

Chicago Couple

My lovely fiancée and favorite travel buddy.

Holiday decorations in downtown Chicago.

Christmas Decorations & Windows: Walking around downtown to check out the decorations is always a holiday tradition for us. I especially love checking out the decked out store windows on Michigan Avenue.

Ice skating at The Bean at Millennium Park at Christmas time.

Ice Skating at Millennium Park: I just love people watching here! We grabbed lunch and coffee at Le Pain Quotidien across the street and fell in love with it's cozy and rustic atmosphere and tasty organic menu. I've heard the Peninsula's rooftop also has a fun & festive rink (I mean look how cute) if you're looking for something less touristy!

The cheese case at Eataly in Chicago.

Eataly: This Italian marketplace is an experience in itself so I always add it to our weekend itinerary. We picked up some cheese and wine to snack on in our hotel room. This store is such a feast for the senses and there's even a Nutella bar! Next time I want to take a cooking class.

Chicago weekend tips!

A Night on the Town: We are foodies and love trying out new restaurants and bars. Two of our forever favorites are Quartino's (a shared plate Italian restaurant) & Giordano's for deep dish pizza. Blogging friend & Chicago foodie Kitt at the Kittchen put together the most amazing round-up of restaurants!

Colorful candy at Dylan's Candy Bar in Chicago

Dylan's Candy Bar: If you have a sweet tooth like Kyle & I you have to make a stop at Dylan's Candy Bar. You can fill your treat bag with any candy you could imagine and try some unique sweets you've never even heard of. Kyle is quite literally like a kid in a candy store here.

Georgia O'Keefe at Art Institute in Chicago

Art Institute: You could spend an entire day in the Art Institute because there is so much to see and it's all housed in the most beautiful building. If you only have a limited amount of time to check out the museum do some research ahead of time to prioritize. My favorite pieces are from Georgia O' Keefe, van Gogh, Degas, & Monet. I also love all of the Eames mid-century furniture designs

A winter day in downtown Chicago.

The most exciting part of the trip for me was finding my wedding dress at BHLDN, but I'll be sharing a post about that later! Our quick trip definitely had us in the holiday spirit!

Which cities are your favorite weekend getaways?

Modern Day Audrey Party Dress

The holidays feel like an extra excuse to get glammed up and put on my party dress & chic statement accessories. My favorite way to winterize dresses are with tights & buttery leather moto jacket. This piece is one of my favorite items ever (a souvenir from a trip to Itay). This LC Lauren Conrad dress combines two of my favorites- beautiful black lace & a blush swingy skirt.

I think the statement sunglasses (this pair is called "Audrey" by Celine.. obsessed!) & leather bow are what really finish off the look and bring an element of glamour.  It definitely makes everything feel a little modern day Audrey Hepburn inspired- my favorite! Just add the chic little chignon bun!

Home Spa Night How-To

I'm gearing up for a long Wisconsin winter and let me tell you folks, it can be rough. When the sun starts setting at 3 PM and my legs haven't seen the light of day in far too long a little self-care goes a long way! Everyone has their own unique ways of treating themselves in dreary Winter months. For me, it's an at-home spa night complete with candles, face masks & a good book.

I'll share a few of my favorite ways to bring the relaxation of the spa to your home to help you fight the winter blues!

At Home Spa Night How-To

My Spa Night Faves:

Winter Home Spa Night How-To Tips:

1. Bring the Spa Home with a Relaxing Bath: My home bathtub is far from spa-like, but lighting a couple of candles for ambience and breaking out my favorite scented scrubs (LifeTherapy is a current favorite) puts me in zen-like state. LUSH Cosmetics bath bombs are amazing!

2. Put on a Face Mask: Whether you choose to DIY a face mask or purchase one (I love these!), be sure you choose one to match your skin type for the best results. I love trying out natural methods- this post has some great ideas!

3. Luscious Locks!: An at-home spa night is the perfect opportunity to take the extra steps to pamper yourself more than you would with your typical beauty routine. Try putting on a super moisturizing hair mask to deeply condition your hair.

4. Invite a Friend: A girl's spa night is the best because you can trade spa treatments. Trade facials or pedicures so you can both enjoy getting pampered (& save some $$!).

5. Create a Relaxing Mood: Music always helps me turn my brain off & relax. I love the Coffee Shop Indie playlist on Songza! So often we're checking our phones and email and there is something so supremely gratifying about hiding your phone in the other room and digging into a good read (I'm reading Cameron Diaz's "The Body Book"!)

What are your favorite ways to enjoy an at-home spa night?

Start Each Day with a Grateful Heart

"Start each day with a grateful heart... and a large cup of coffee". Pretty sure truer words have never been spoken! This graphic tee was designed & sold by Lauren of Hibiskiss Clothing, a fellow girlboss. She swapped her NYC stilettos for flip flops and is living the dream in Hawaii. She has the cutest unique apparel designs in her shop and an inspiring and positive outlook on life!

This year has totally flown by and truth be told there are so many things I wanted to do with my business that just didn't happen! It's always disappointing to me when I don't achieve the things I set out to do. I spent last week working on my business plan for 2016 and I'm so excited about what's in store. Each new year presents a opportunity to re-evaluate, manage your time better, and dream bigger. I can't wait to share with you what's in store!

Grateful Heart Graphic Tee: Hibiskiss Clothing | Plaid Blanket Scarf Wrap: Aerie  (similar) | Burgundy Velvet Pants: LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl's (on sale for $36) | Leopard Heels: Target (similar) | Gold Link Bracelet: Brighthouse Baubles (similar)

It's been a long time since I've worn colorful pants but these velvet-y burgundy pants are so perfect for the holidays and so perfect for dressing up a graphic tee. Blanket scarfs look super over-whelming on my 5'0 frame, but I love wearing them as a cozy wrap! I'm so impressed with the quality of my Hibiskiss graphic tee. It's the right amount of slouchy and super soft!

I'm so grateful for the last year and a half in business. It's been so fun watching my little business evolve and take shape and I've met so many amazing people along the way! I'm excited to see where 2016 takes me. If you're a business owner wanting to up your social media game next year, sign up for a  Social Media Strategy Session with me. Best Streaming Christmas Movies

There's something about this time of year that makes me just want to have a constant loop of Christmas movies and hot cocoa. Thankfully, my future husband feels the exact same. We also don't have cable so there's been a whole lot of Netflix going on. I've been scoping out where to find the best Christmas movie on streaming services (& inexpensive Amazon rentals when you can't find exactly what you're looking for).

So grab the sugar cookies & a hot toddy and make yourself a holiday movie date with your guy or your best girlfriends with these movies.  I've bolded my personal fav of each group!

Travel Guide: Milwaukee | Restaurants, Bars & Coffee Shops

When it comes to traveling there's a few things I like to do most: shop the local boutiques, explore the local sights, and fill my face in true foodie fashion. I typically rely on food review sites like Zomato or the recommendations of others via Instagram or blog posts, but on my recent trip I had the Visit Milwaukee team to take me to their favorite spots.

I recently shared my guide to shopping in Milwaukee and I'm back now with a guide to foodie faves- the best restaurants, bars & coffee shops in the area. Seriously guys, the food alone makes it worth planning a trip to Milwaukee!

 photo visit milwaukee colectivo_zpsxqxdgiep.png

Coffee Shops:
If you're looking for a great cup of coffee, you're in luck. There are a couple of popular local chains in Milwaukee, each with their own ambience and specialty coffee. My favorites are Colectivo Coffee- you've probably seen their colorful coffee cups in about a billion of my Instagram posts, plus they make a mean latte. Additionally, Stone Creek Coffee, is another Milwaukee staple- they specialize in pour over styles and natural latte flavorings (think vanilla & honey)- their space in the Third Ward is shared with an independent radio station- so cool!

 photo visit milwaukee cranky als_zpsqim5ylgz.jpg

The pastries in the Milwaukee area are out of this world. Wauwatosa doughnut shop, Cranky Al's, is a must when I visit my relatives. Yes, they are as good as they look, and no, I won't split the maple bacon doughnut with you (I kid, I kid!). Head across the street to Rocket Baby Bakery for artfully-made pastries and macarons.

 photo Visit Milwaukee 1_zpsuaekvn2s.jpg

Breakfast & Brunch:
Can you guys tell breakfast foods are my favorite? I could seriously eat them any time of day! We stopped at Blue's Egg and the first thing you notice was the line out the door- on a weekday (always a good sign to me)! Their menu was a foodie's dream full of unique takes on breakfast staples. I tried a nutella latte, hashbrowns with cheddar,  monkey bread,  and blueberry pancakes with lemon cream anglaise.

 photo visit milwaukee 14_zpsowm0hmdc.jpg

Café Benelux has a prime location in the Third Ward and is a great option for any time of day. We stopped in for brunch and it did not disappoint. The southern girl in me can't help but order fried chicken and waffles if I see it on a menu- and this was the best I've ever had. I mean seriously, is your mouth not salivating from this picture?

 photo visit milwaukee pizza man_zpsox3dcded.jpg

After a long morning of holiday shopping at Mayfair, there's no better choice than splitting an old school thin pizza at Pizza Man. We did exactly that and had the Hawaiian pizza and the Italian inspired Atomica- oh and don't forget the garlic cheesy bread, I'm still craving that stuff! Their new location in Wauwatosa is beautiful with reclaimed wood walls & wine bottle chandeliers.

The Milwaukee Public Market is a great lunch option if you're downtown. This Historic Third Ward marketplace has everything you could dream of for lunch- from salads to Mexican to Asian inspired cuisine or Fresh Seafood. I had a salad and fresh pressed juice which was the perfect light lunch!

 photo visit milwaukee rumpus room_zpsdmauam4c.jpg

Before we went to see Wicked at the Marcus Theater we had dinner at Rumpus Room, right across the street. It would be the perfect place for a dinner date or special night out with the girls. We noshed on a charcuterie board and indulged in some hand mixed cocktails and local beers. Then, had an amazing regionally sourced meal. The Bartolotta restaurant family is home to a lot of delicious & renowned restaurants in the Milwaukee area, so be sure to check them all out!

 photo La Reve Visit Milwaukee_zpsdcysgaf3.jpg

Another can't miss restaurant for dinner is La Reve, a French restaurant in the village of Wauwatosa. Eating dinner there seriously feels like stepping into a Parisian bistro between the candlelit mood lighting, French music playing, and beautiful (and mouth-watering) Patisserie case. I enjoyed the most amazing Coq au Riesling, a sausage stuffed chicken breast over pappardelle pasta in a wine sauce with a French 75 champagne cocktail. You can't leave without taking home something from their bakery- these pastries are true works of art!

photo visit milwaukee the ruby tap_zpsxankf6g5.jpg

Bars & Breweries:
One of the coolest places we went to during our foodie stops in Milwaukee was The Ruby Tap, a Wauwatosa neighborhdood bar with a huge selection of wines.. on tap! It was such a cool experience being able to sample different wines. You're able to select a self-service sampler size, small glass, and large glass size for each bottle they have on tap. It also has a warm and inviting ambience, a romantic date spot or place to catch up with the girls.

Wisconsin is also arguably the birth place of beer in America, so you won't want to leave home without trying a flight and taking a tour of a local craft brewery. I'm pretty sure I've visited them all, but my favorites are Milwaukee Brewing Company, Lakefront Brewery, and Milwaukee Ale House. I also enjoy going to the Old German Beer Hall for a pint which represents the spirit of Munich's famous Hofbrauhaus.

If I haven't already convinced you that you need to take your next weekend getaway in Milwaukee, be sure to check out the Visit Milwaukee site for tons of itinerary ideas. They're also offering exclusive travel and hotel deals for the holidays if you want to make a fun weekend of shopping. Don't forget to enter to win a shopping weekend giveaway so you can win an experience like the one I had!

Thank you again to the Visit Milwaukee team for your amazing Midwest hospitality and showing me around your gem of a city. As they say Milwaukee has a small town feel, with a big heart and it couldn't be more true!

Be sure to check out my guide to Milwaukee Shopping for even more tips!

Fairisle Ski Sweater

Something about the snow makes me want to curl up in my coziest sweater. This time of year quite literally gives me the warm, fuzzies. I saw this Lauren Conrad for Kohl's sweater while I was on the hunt for some cold weather pieces and knew I had to it. It's a chic take on the classic fairisle sweater and I scored it on sale for $30! It was the perfect piece to lounge around in drinking coffee and watching the snow fall while Kyle enjoyed the opening day of hunting season (can any of y'all commiserate?).

It started snowing on Friday and we woke up to a beautiful winter wonderland the next morning. There's something so magical about it and it definitely makes it feel like the holidays have arrived. This outfit has a bit of an apres ski look to it, and looks equally as chic out in the snow as it does curled up next to a fireplace with hot cocoa.
